Lala’s Side Dish Collection: Delicious Grilled Cauliflower Steaks

Kicking off a new series here on the blog! Over the next few weeks, I will be sharing a collection of easy and healthy side dishes that will make any meal a thousand times better. Tried and true, super tasty and heathy, these are side dishes that I have served to my friends and family over the years -vegetarian or not- and were happily loved by all.

The beauty of this grilled cauliflower steak recipe is that it is also a light, tasty and healthy alternative to grilled meat. The cauliflower is cut into thick slices or “steaks”, brushed with a seasoned olive oil mix and grilled until tender. It is a delicious, perfectly seasoned side dish bursting with flavour! Plus, it is such an easy recipe to do that you will be left wondering why you have not tried cauliflower like this before.

If you want to skip the paprika, you may do so. The result is still awesome!

RECIPE

GRILLED CAULIFLOWER STEAKS

Ready in 20 minutes.
Serves 2-4 people.

INGREDIENTS
  • 1 -2 large cauliflowers
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • ½ tsp sweet or smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • ¼ tsp ground pepper
  • 2 tbsp parsley – chopped (optional)
  • 1 lime cut in wedges (optional)
PREPARATION
  1. Remove the outer leaves of the cauliflower. Cut the head of the cauliflower in half down the center. Do not remove the stem.
  2. Cut each half into 1 1/2 – 2 inch thick slices or “steaks”. If you cut thinner slices the cauliflower florets will not hold together. Reserve the florets that break off, they too can be grilled!
  3. In a small bowl combine the olive oil, salt, pepper and paprika. Adjust to taste.
  4. Using a pastry brush, coat both sides with the seasoned olive oil.
GRILL
  • Preheat the grill to medium
  • Place the cauliflower steaks and florets on the grill and cook for 4-5 minutes.
  • Using a spatula, carefully flip the steaks
  • Continue to grill for an additional 3-4 minutes until tender
  • Note: If you have no access to a grill, you can use a cast iron skillet.
SERVE

If desired, sprinkle with parsley or add a squeeze of lime juice.

I truly think grilled cauliflower beats steamed, sautéed or dipped in the ubiquitous ranch dip by far!
