HOW TO STYLE THE FRONT PORCH: SEPTEMBER EDITION

September has arrived and that means Fall is on the horizon!

Although I am enjoying the latest bits of warm weather here in Canada, I have to confess I am quite excited to switch gears to Fall. I love the changes that come with the seasons! And being able to refresh my decor, my recipes and my closet for colder temperatures gets me super excited.

I had styled our front porch for the summer and we loved it very much!  We still enjoy this space daily… either to greet the morning with a nice cup of coffee or to finish the workday with a glass of bubbly. But since last week, we are waking up to chilly mornings and ending the day with cooler evenings that sometimes require a warm and cozy throw.  So, I decided it was time to restyle our front porch decor to reflect the change in mood and weather.

But first, if you wish to see what our porch looked like when we bought the house and how I styled it for summer, click here

FRONT PORCH DECOR ESSENTIALS

Since it is still technically summer, I switched our front porch decor to a warmer and earthier palette but avoided the typical autumnal colours. The following are the decorative elements we added in order to slowly transition our front porch for Fall.

AREA RUG

As with our Summer Edition look, I started with a good sized rug to anchor the space. We swapped our light grey rug for a beige one with brown undertones. This indoor/outdoor area rug can withstand our Canadian winters, plus it is super budget friendly and quite soft to the touch- ideal for our Mushu who loves to stretch out and sleep on it.

SEATING

The bench swing was an unexpected bonus when we bought our Edwardian townhouse. It is the best place to hang out and relax. We also added two dark grey chairs (not shown) to round up the conversation area. I am still on the hunt for a dark brown pouf – maybe a vegan leather one that can withstand rain and sun. Will keep you posted on that one.

ACCENT TABLE

Any good conversation area needs an accent or small side table where you or your guests can have a place to set your drinks down or use it for decorative accents. We purchased our black, round table at HomeSense. It is light but sturdy and good sized. I love that it adds a much needed contrast to our set up, not only due to the colour but because its shape is quite sculptural and unique.

ACCESSORIES

I wanted to do something completely different for my September Look. So I immediately thought of a Cali/Boho vibe but a bit more restrained and grown-up. The addition of textural decorative cushions and a chunkier throw was necessary not only for the style I was going for but also to make this space warm, inviting and cozy for the cooler September weather.

In the evenings, I light up candles in glass hurricanes and set them on my terracotta tray – a favourite souvenir from Honduras.

And finally, to add more colour and life to our little space, we added a large potted palm tree and a small ceramic pot filled with greenery.
