The pandemic forced us to spend more time at home than before, and now our lives have changed forever. So now, more than ever, the importance of easy living and finding comfort in our spaces and in our daily routines is even more significant. Today I am sharing the unsung heroes of daily life at my home… the gadgets that help us survive, function and add a special touch to our routines.

A gadget is a small, unique-use mechanical or electronic device with a practical use but often thought of as a novelty. Also known as a gizmo.

WHITE SOUND MACHINE

This SOUND SLEEP MACHINE is probably the most used gadget in my house. If you are a light sleeper, have a partner or a pet who snores, or have a difficult and fuzzy baby, then you need this device! And trust me, you will never regret this purchase. We love it so much that we even bought extra ones for our guests! This small but mighty machine produces a soothing white noise sound. No birds chirping, water flowing, the rumble of clouds nor any of those distracting chime bells for us! It has different levels of volume and different speeds to suit your sleeping needs. However, if you prefer nature sounds then I suggest the DREAMEGG WHITE NOISE MACHINE with its 29 sounds: 7 white noise, 7 fan sounds, and 15 nature sounds. Both machines are compact enough to bring along for travel.

BLUETOOTH SPEAKER

We love to play music in our house while we go about our day and the BOSE SOUNDLINK is our favourite way to listen to our tunes. Wireless, compact and easy to use, the Soundlink produces big sound–with deep bass–for a full-range listening experience. It has a Lithium-ion battery that can last up to 16 hours. Discreet, small, stylish, portable and yet so powerful! And since Steve and I have different tastes in music, we ended up purchasing a second one. Lol! Check out the Revolve 360, the latest model of the BOSE SOUNDLINK which comes in a beautiful soft grey or the standard black. Plus, it has really great reviews!

CANDLE WICK TRIMMER

Did you know that sales of candles have soared since the pandemic? I mean, who doesn’t like to have a beautifully scented home, right?! I light my precious LINNEAS candles on the daily and taking care of them is important to me. They are not cheap, so I try to make them last. My trick? I trim the wicks every single time before lighting them up. When you do this, your candle will burn slower, more evenly and therefore will last longer. A pair of scissors could do the job- if you can get the right angle and not slash the wax. However, this gadget makes the job easier and less messy and it feels rather ceremonial every time you use it. JEWELRY ORGANIZER AND STAND

Ever since COVID, the need to organize our homes and make them function well for our new lifestyle is super important. Umbra makes phenomenal gadgets for the home and this has got to be one of my favourites. As a gal who loves fashion and decor, organizing my closet and make-up table is my thing. The TRIGEM TABLETOP JEWELRY ORGANIZER has three bars that provide more than enough storage space for you to spread out all your necklaces, while keeping them tangle-free and looking pretty on display. I use the shortest bar to hang bracelets and some of my long earrings. Ha! Ever since the pandemic, the fear of touching things is real. This little gadget came into my life late last year and since then, it has been super useful. The NO-TOUCH DOOR OPENER AND TOUCHSCREEN TOOL is perfect for pushing elevator buttons and opening doors. It also has a rubber touch tip that works fabulously on touchscreens and signature pads so you can avoid touching the public touchscreens at the store checkouts. When on the go, having one of these gadgets on you could be a lifesaver.

KITCHEN GADGETS THAT MAKE LIFE FUN

MILK FROTHER

Ever since getting a frother, I love my coffee and Chai lattes even more. We acquired this CUISINART MILK FROTHER over 3 years ago and it is still going strong. It makes hot or cold froth in just over a minute and has a 500 ml full capacity with a non stick surface that makes for easy cleaning. Yes, it’s rather pricey but it is a great purchase … and the perfect gift for the coffee lovers in your life! Who knew home made coffee could taste so good!

The Nestle Nespresso Aeroccino milk frother is also a great alternative.

SPARKLING WATER MAKER

This one came late in our lives last year and we could not be happier as we love our fizzy drinks. We used to be heavy on Perrier and Pellegrino, but the amount of empty bottles and waste was really overwhelming. In our quest to reduce our carbon imprint, we have officially switched to the SODASTREAM and we absolutely recommend it! We use our filtered, tap water and in seconds we have fizz! We add lemon or lime slices to kick it up a notch. Starter kits come with everything you need – including a BPH free bottle and CO2 canister. It is super easy to use: Insert, fizz and enjoy! Delicious, environmentally friendly and guilt-free.

CHAMPAGNE STOPPER

We love to drink Champagne, Cava and Prosecco. Sometimes we don’t finish the bottle, so storing the leftover with this STOPPER has been a game changer. No more flat champagne! Another gadget that gets daily use. Seriously, this tool is quite handy! Whether it’s for my morning lemon water, for preparing my favourite mojito cocktail or a delicious Honduran ceviche, this little gadget is the one. Efficient, practical and easy to wash, this manual press squeezes the pulp up to the last drop! I am very happy with my painted GREEN METAL squeezer, however, I am so tempted to upgrade to the JOYIT STAINLESS STEEL because of its large capacity bowl and heavy duty construction.

PANINI PRESS

Simple and easy to use, this CUISINART GRIDDLER is the perfect gadget. We bought ours when my girls were in their teenage years so they could prepare their favourite grilled cheese sandwiches and gourmet paninis in a safe manner. The advantage of this gadget over a regular sandwich maker is that this is a Panini press as well as a contact grill, a flat grill and griddle -with a removable, nonstick grill and griddle plates that are reversible. Easy to use and clean. Now that our daughters have moved out, they each have their own and I can tell you they use it tons. We all do!
