BEST SUNSCREENS FOR THE FACE – MY TOP 6

If you haven’t heard, sunscreen is a crucial element in preventing wrinkles, dark skin spots and cancer. Experts say we should be applying our SPF daily, whether it’s a sunny day or not. Hmmm… And that includes men, too!

With warmer weather and Summer almost here, it is even more important. So, before heading out to enjoy your day, better check if you are sunshine-ready. And it all begins with sunscreen for the face. Is your bottle past its due date? Not enjoying your current formula? You have never have given one a try? Then this post is for you!

I have put together a list of my top picks- all dermatologist approved and loved. But first, the basics.

How to Choose and Use Sunscreen for the Face

Read the Label

First, look for products labeled “Broad Spectrum”. This means protection against both UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays. Make sure you choose a sun protection factor – SPF – of at least 30 or higher.

Second, there is a choice to make between mineral and chemical formulations, as well as some that are a mix of those two. Note that mineral sunscreens deflect and scatter (instead of absorb) UV rays. They may be better for sensitive skin and usually contain natural ingredients. Chemical sunscreens are absorbed into your bloodstream and work differently than mineral ones in order to protect you from sunburn.

If doing outdoors activities or swimming make sure you look for a waterproof formula.

Identify Your Skin Type

Finding the right product for your skin type and skin tone is usually a trial and error process. Properly identifying your skin type is the first step. Determine if you have normal, oily, dry, combination or sensitive skin. You might also have to research and test different types of formulations, especially if you play sports, sweat profusely, wear make-up or have darker skin.

Application Tips

The correct application of sunscreen is key to avoiding sunburn. How and when we apply sunscreen is as important as the amount we use.

Sunscreen should be the last step in your morning skincare routine. Dermatologists recommend you layer it over an antioxidant rich serum or moisturizer. This combo will defend your skin against free radical damage, inflammation and slow down the signs of aging. Apply sunscreen at least 15 minutes before sun exposure. If you are spending a good chunk of money on face serums, moisturizers, retinol and treatments- but not wearing any sunscreen for the face- then you are wasting your time and money. So, let’s get down to business.

How much product should one apply? Start with a nickel sized amount and work it in sections. Do your cheeks, nose, and forehead and then move onto chin, neck and ears.  It is easier to start with a smaller amount and add more afterwards, rather than apply a big goop and then struggle to eliminate the dreaded white cast.

Sunscreen should be layered before applying your makeup. Drying time will depend on your skin type and product formulation. You might also want to re-apply as the day goes by. There are new products in the market – facial mists with SPF50- that I am researching and testing. I will keep you informed and report later on.
