HEALTHY SCALP = HEALTHY HAIR
Give your scalp the same love and attention as you give your face. Scalp is skin and it deserves proper care. Product residue, dead skin and oils on your scalp can clog follicles and seriously affect hair growth.
Purchase hair products that are free of harsh chemicals and additives. Cleaning and moisturizing your hair and scalp with good products, such as this SHAMPOO and CONDITIONER is a great start. Both are formulated without sulphates and parabens. For an irritated scalp, you can try this soothing SHAMPOO. Dermatologists have proven that a clean, hydrated scalp is conducive to hair growth.
The VICHY DERCOS SYSTEM has done wonders for my hair. It works on building strength within the core structure to help it to grow back thicker & healthier.
TIPS
- Avoid hot showers or washing hair with hot water which can cause brittle strands and frizz
- Use a SCALP MASSAGER while you shampoo to lift residue and stimulate circulation
- If need be, apply a leave-in conditioner after every wash for added hydration
- Use a SCALP TREATMENT to soothe and fortify the scalp
Using a scalp massager not only feels FANTASTIC, it increases blood flow to your hair follicles.
STYLING YOUR HAIR
Be gentle and kind to your hair, especially when your hair is wet. This is when your hair is at its weakest point. I highly recommend using a wide-tooth comb or a WET BRUSH for detangling fragile hair. This will put less tension on your hair when combing, thus causing less breakage.
Massage scalp with hair growth serum and use always use a heat protectant before applying heat to style your hair. Try to keep heat styling to a minimum. Better yet, allow hair to air dry as often as you can.
Avoid hairstyles that pull on the hair, such as tight braids or ponytails. Ditch the elastic hair bands and switch to SILK or SATIN hair ties. Resist the urge to sleep in a tight top bun at night, do a loose braid instead.
If you can, go the extra mile and switch your cotton pillowcases to SILK (or SATIN) ones. Cotton pillowcases can be quite damaging to fragile hair as the friction can cause knotting and breakage. Plus, they pull out moisture from your strands.
For my ladies and gents who dye their hair: you must go easy on the bleach! As long as you are just topping up the roots/regrowth then this is absolutely fine. For extremely damaged hair, many hairstylists suggest using OLAPLEX No3 treatment to improve the bonds in your hair- making it stronger and keeping it in better condition.
EAT A PROTEIN RICH DIET
A healthy diet and proper nutrition can help keep your hair strong, shiny and growing. Hair is made of protein and when your diet lacks protein rich foods, then your hair growth will be affected.
You also want to eat foods rich in Omega 3- to help keep your hair and scalp from drying out. You can find a list of nutrient rich foods in this blog post I wrote last year.
SUPPLEMENTS FOR HEALTHY HAIR
Start taking HAIR SUPPLEMENTS. These should contain iron, omegas, zinc, selenium, vitamin D and other key vitamins to boost your hair health. I also suggest adding COLLAGEN to your daily diet, as it can improve your overall health plus that of your skin, nails and hair.
MANAGE YOUR STRESS
One major cause of hair loss is the stress that comes with life changing events such as a surgery, childbirth, death of a loved one, job situation and more recently, Covid. So, it is important to manage your stress levels- incorporate exercise and fresh air activities, good sleep habits and seek counselling if necessary.
BRING IN THE EXPERTS
If you are experiencing serious hair loss please seek the advice of a medical expert before it is too late. A proper evaluation of your blood, scalp and overall health is necessary to determine the cause and set up a treatment.
Your family doctor can order a blood test to check your iron levels and test for vitamin deficiencies, as well as check for thyroid problems.
A visit to your dermatologist, who will verify the health of your scalp, can help tremendously. For serious cases of hair loss, a dermatologist might suggest a topical treatment such as Minoxidil (Rogaine), oral medication (finasteride and dutasteride) and lastly, PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) therapy.
